High School Tours - Frequently Asked Questions

Students

How was I selected?

Beyond Sports has built partnerships with college coaches to identify student-athletes that show potential and interest in playing at the college level.

Can I invite any of my friends who are athletes?

We encourage students to share the international experience with teammates and friends. Email gobeyond@beyondsportstours.com with nominations.

Who will be my coach?

Our high school tours are led by college coaches. Each roster will have an assigned Tour Coach. During practice sessions, players will be coached by all the coaches on the tour for an opportunity to experience different collegiate coaching styles. Many of our Tour Coaches have brought their college teams on a Beyond Sports Foreign Tour, or have coached one of our Invitational College Tours. Here is a list of 2019 Tour Coaches.

Can I request a roommate?

We will accommodate roommate requests to the best of our ability. We always assume teammates will want to room together, but if you have a friend from another school/team joining the tour be sure to let us know.

What is included & not included in the program cost?

Included:
- Round-trip airfare from a Hub Airport
- Two meals daily (students will purchase one meal daily) - All sightseeing tours and entrance fees mentioned in the itinerary - All transportation in-country - GeoBlue International Health Insurance ( view policy) - Beyond Sports uniform

Parents & Family

How was my son/daughter selected for this program?

Beyond Sports has built partnerships with college coaches to identify student-athletes that show potential and interest in playing at the college level.

How do I plan for my son/daughter’s trip?

Beyond Sports does the planning for you! Our staff is available to answer questions anytime via video conference, phone, text, or email (schedule a call here, or call us anytime). Once registration is complete, you can expect to receive your student’s flight itinerary at least eight weeks before departure and a Pre-Departure Guide (packing list, staff contact info, detailed itinerary etc.) four weeks before departure.

How will my son/daughter travel?

Airfare is included in the cost of the High School programs from a HUB airport. This means Beyond Sports will be coordinating your airfare. Getting to the HUB airport is not included in our cost; however, we can help make those arrangements if needed. You'll provide us with your home address and preferred airport(s). Our staff will confirm your requested departure airport before booking. Please note some exclusions apply. We will coordinate communication between participants who are flying on the same itinerary so they can travel together. We’ll provide detailed airport instructions in our Pre-Departure Guide and upon arrival, our staff will be at the airport to greet the participants.

Who is chaperoning the trip?

A bilingual tour guide and Tour Coach are with the group for the duration of the trip. Our tour guide will focus on organizing logistics, meals, and culturally enriching excursions while the Tour Coach is building a positive team environment. Since 2010, our staff have toured with over 2700 students and 150 college coaches.

What additional costs will my son/daughter incur?

Two meals per day will be provided by Beyond Sports. Breakfast is provided daily at the hotel. Depending on the schedule, either lunch or dinner is provided each day. For the lunch/dinner that is not provided, the group will break up into smaller supervised groups to enjoy the local cuisine and have an authentic experience.
Passport application and checked baggage fees are not included in the program cost. We recommend $15/day for the independent meals. The cost for snacks and souvenirs varies widely from student to student.

How many players are on each roster?

It is important that each student-athlete has a great experience, and ample playing time is key! To ensure relatively equal playing time for each player, rosters are limited to a sport-specific size; 8-10 players for basketball, 15-18 for soccer, 8-14 for volleyball, etc. In past tours, when we have had to exceed these roster limits, an additional game is added to the schedule to ensure ample playing time for each athlete.

Does my son/daughter need any additional shots or vaccines?

No special vaccinations are required for travel to any of our locations. However, every person has a unique medical history. Please consult your physician if you have any concerns regarding your son/daughter's medical history. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can provide additional information regarding health-safety protocols for specific countries.

What if my son/daughter has a food allergy or dietary restriction?

During the registration process, you will be able to note allergies, dietary restrictions, and any medical issues that you would like our staff to be aware of. While most allergies are easily accommodated, in some cases we may reach out to discuss your son/daughter’s allergies in greater detail. If you have a specific concern, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

What if my son/daughter becomes sick or is injured during the trip?

All travelers are covered by GeoBlue Health Insurance, a world leader in international student health insurance, for the duration of the trip (view our full policy here). If a participant has any concern of illness or injury, no matter how minor, they are encouraged to let a staff member know immediately so they can monitor the situation. Our staff are trained to always err on the side of caution and to seek medical attention for any concerning illness or injury. In the event medical attention is required, a student will be taken to a local hospital or clinic.

Can you tell me more about Travel Insurance?

Most travel insurance covers the cost of flight delays/cancellations, missed portions of the trip, lost luggage, and hotel accommodations during major travel delays. It would also reimburse you for trip cancellation due to any documented injury, illness, or family emergency. Generally, we will not refund late cancellations because most funds have already been put toward program costs (hotels, airfare, transportation). There are many providers of travel insurance that are reliable, we recommend RoamRight Insurance. Their policies are priced as a percentage of the trip cost.

Who will the teams be playing against?

Our teams will compete against local school and club teams that have been carefully selected to match the competition level of our athletes.

Is an athletic trainer available during the trip?

Basic services are provided by the local club teams such as ice, towels, and water. For any significant injuries, players will be taken to a local clinic or hospital (see GeoBlue Health Insurance Policy here). Players should bring any supplemental equipment they may need (knee/ankle braces, athletic tape, etc).

Travel

How will my son/daughter travel?

Airfare is included in the cost of all High School Tour programs from a Hub Airport. This means that Beyond Sports offers 1-3 large airports in the US from which participants can travel with the group. Getting to/from the Hub Airport is not included in the program cost, and is the responsibility of each participant. During registration, travelers will select their preferred Hub Airport and submit all necessary travel information for us to book their group airfare. Participants are not required to travel with the group from a Hub Airport. Some families find it more cost-effective- and their student is comfortable traveling alone- to book airfare directly from their home airport to the destination. In this case, participants can opt-out of the group airfare in their registration and the cost of airfare will be deducted from their program cost. Our staff will meet students traveling independently at the airport upon arrival, and transportation back to the airport will be provided at the end of the trip. Please contact a Beyond Sports Program Coordinator for your tour’s specific flight deduction.

What are the hotel accommodations?

All of our accommodations are 3- to 4-star hotels. We strive to find hotels that provide safe, comfortable accommodations and are centrally located. Past participants have found that our accommodations meet or exceed the quality that they experience when traveling with their club teams.

Can family and friends join the trip?

Absolutely! We encourage family members to join us! Family members joining the trip will be included in all reservations and activities. For reasons of both liability and quality of service, please understand that we will not accommodate travelers with trip information or reservations if they do not book their trip through Beyond Sports. Family and friends can register with their student-athlete on the relevant tour page, found here.

What is the program cost for family members?

The first family member to travel pays the same program cost as the student-athlete. Every additional traveler that will share same-room occupancy receives a $500 discount. Special accommodations may be available for families with young children, depending on destination and hotel policy. Please contact a Beyond Sports Program Coordinator with any questions about pricing for larger groups.
